An arts and sports community project commissioned by Market Place in collaboration with Palace House Newmarket: National Heritage Centre for Horseracing and Sporting Art. Developed with kite specialist Zachary De Santos, local Newmarket artist Paula Wilson, composer Jasmin Kent Rodgman, and with local community members, designing, making and flying specialised kites.
Zach led the flying workshops and Paula led the design of large-scale fabric kites, all hand-made by Newmarket residents, who designed and decorated them. Done in collaboration with community groups Suffolk Kite Flying Club, Abbeycroft Leisure Centre, All Saints Church, the Marco Botti Stables, and Waitrose.
Presented as part of the Newmarket Carnival and the Newmarket Music Festival, supported by the Newmarket Academy Samba Band. The final performance was a choreographed flight called Kite Ballet, where the actions of the kites were triggered to an original score by Jasmin.
